Hakeem commends govt. for eliminating terrorism
The Island, Wednesday, 26 May 09

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem, on Wednesday (26) in Parliament congratulated President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and commanders of the three forces for eliminating terrorism from Sri Lanka.

MP Hakeem participating in the debate on the Orders made by the Minister of Export Development and International Trade under the Section 14(1) of the Sri Lanka Export Board Act No. 40 of 1979, relating to Cess Levy, said that this achievement against terrorism was "Very remarkable and unprecedented."
The Muslim community had ‘all the more reason to rejoice’ over this victory because it had suffered
heavily by the LTTE atrocities for the past three decades, he said.

The Muslims had been chased out of their native places by the LTTE and had been living in temporary shelters for three decades. Thousands of Muslims had been killed. There are thousands of other Muslims living in camps in Puttalam and the Government should take action to resettle them in their native places as soon as possible, he said.

Referring to the Opposition’s request to do away with emergency laws, the SLMC leader admitted that the Government needed some more time to complete their mission in the immediate post war situation. The SLMC became a party to this request just because it wished to see the dawn of normalcy soon, he said.

He commended the Government for taking action to hold Local Government polls in the liberated areas of the Northern Province. The local government elections come to these areas after a lapse of 11 years and it is better to give people the chance to exercise their democratic right of franchise, he said.

Muslim Community of Sri Lanka
The first wave of Muslims to arrive in Sri Lanka came from West Asia. Therefore let us briefly look at the Muslim achievements in West Asia. Islam originated in the Arab Peninsula, where the Prophet Mohammed preached in 622 AD.

The Struggle
As the third, and smallest, of the island's racial-religious communities, the Sri Lankan Muslims - have become the forgotten losers in this vicious struggle.

The Population
As the third, and smallest, of the island's racial-religious communities, the Sri Lankan Muslims - have become the forgotten losers in this vicious struggle.

Our Rights
The ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka has had a terrible effect on the Muslims. In the South, Muslims have been victims of riots and pogroms. In the North East the forcible eviction of more than one hundred thousand Muslims..
