The Muslims had been chased out of
their native places by the LTTE and had been living in temporary
shelters for three decades. Thousands of Muslims had been killed.
There are thousands of other Muslims living in camps in Puttalam and
the Government should take action to resettle them in their native
places as soon as possible, he said.
Referring to the Opposition’s request
to do away with emergency laws, the SLMC leader admitted that the
Government needed some more time to complete their mission in the
immediate post war situation. The SLMC became a party to this
request just because it wished to see the dawn of normalcy soon, he
said.
He commended the Government for
taking action to hold Local Government polls in the liberated areas
of the Northern Province. The local government elections come to
these areas after a lapse of 11 years and it is better to give
people the chance to exercise their democratic right of franchise,
he said.
