to Muslim Council of Britain
Friday, 11 January 2008
The SLMC is to increase its international
presence and talk of the issues faced by the
Muslims in Sri Lanka today especially in the
North and the East through the avenue created by
the obtaining affiliation of
the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).
The MCB is reported to be a
leading Muslim organization in
UK which is an umbrella body of
over 500 national, regional and
local organizations and runs
mosques, charities and schools.
According to SLMC General
Secretary Hasen Ali the
affiliation would help them to
seek support of the
international community to
maintain the identity of all
Muslims in Sri Lanka.
The affiliation of MCB has
been granted following a
discussion held by Mr. Hasen Ali
with SLMC UK branch President Mr
S M Haleem and General Secretary
Mr Faizal Sulaimalebbe together
with MCB officials on December
31 last year.
After this discussion the MCB
had a meeting to decide on
granting the affiliation to the
SLMC. The SLMC was confirmed of
the affiliation on January 11
this year.
During the discussion with
MCB, the SLMC Secretary General
had briefed its officials on the
current situation in the North
and the East and specially the
problems faced by the Muslims in
the East such as land grabbing.
He had also briefed them on the
approach adopted by the
government in solving the
national issue. The SLMC has
also decided to open new
branches in areas where there
are large Muslim communities in
the UK following the obtaining
of MCB affiliation. An 18 member
committee is to be formed to
undertake this task according to
party sources.
