SLMC UK Hand in Petition to UK Prime Minister

On 4th February 2008 the SLMC UK delegation headed by SLMC UK President Mr S M Haleem, handed in a petition to the British Prime Minister Hon. Gordon Brown MP at No.10 Downing Street.
The petition highlighting the Human Rights Violations, grievances of Sri Lankan Muslims is the first ever to be handed in to UK Prime Minister.
The petition was handed in by SLMC UK Public Relations Director Mr A M Mashoor, and was accompanied by

SLMC UK President Mr S M Haleem, General Secretary Mr Faizal Sulaimalebbe and Vice - President Mr H A Asif Nimry, Director of Human Rights Affairs Mr M Farook Ahsan, Working Committee Secretary Mr M Ruby Asath.

 
Demonstration Called off
The SLMC UK planned a Peaceful Demonstration outside Sri Lankan High Commission on February 4th, to highlight the Human Rights Violations against the Sri Lankan Muslim Community.
The Demonstration was very professionally planned; members from various Sri Lankan organisations were to take part. Furthermore, various British organisations and prominent political leaders were to take part
such as the Respect party London Mayoral Candidate and Stop the War Coalition organiser Lindsey German. Around 200 people were to be take part in the Demonstration.

The Organisers planned to make aware of the Jaffna Muslim’s re-settlement issues, Failure to re-habilitate Tsunami victims in the Ampara District, and Abductions of Muslim Businessmen in Colombo, Land Grabbing from Farmers, and Systematic Colonisation in the East, Grooming Paramilitary, and Signing Electoral pact with them.

The Sri Lankan High Commission officials contacted the SLMC UK President Mr S M Haleem, and after series of discussions both parties agreed for a serious dialogue on the Human Rights Violations issues of Sri Lankan Muslims.

The organisers then decided to call off the Demonstration under grounds of marking as respect to the National Independence day of Sri Lanka. The Deputy High Commissioner Mr Suthantha Ganegama promised to work with the Sri Lankan Muslim Community in the UK.

And he further emphasised that the concerns of Human Rights Violations on Muslims Community in Sri Lanka will be strongly expressed through the Sri Lankan High Commission to relevant authorities in Sri Lanka and will be followed on. A petition to the Sri Lankan Government has also been handed in through the Sri Lankan High Commission.

Both the SLMC UK and the Sri Lanka High Commission arrived to a mutual understanding based on Community Cohesion, agreed to work on principles which will integrate all communities in Sri Lanka.

The SLMC UK Director of Public Relations Mr A M Mashoor informed the media that various Awareness Programs are been planned to internationalise the grievances of the Sri Lankan Muslim Community. And expressed that future demonstrations are possible if the Sri Lankan Government continues to undermine the Aspirations Sri Lankan Muslim Communities.
